Croatia is probably one of the most popular European destinations, particularly in recent years more and more Brits have travelled to the country, especially those die hard '#GameOfThrones' fans! But actually it's mainly because you are almost guaranteed sunshine - those living in Croatia enjoy 2715 hours of sunshine every year, more than those living in #Sydney!
In September 2019 I travelled to #Split with my bestest friends for 5 days of pure bliss. A group of girls, finally getting their summer holiday and a break from the #bossbabe office vibes!
We stayed in a villa on the outskirts of Split with a private secluded pool and plenty of space. We could walk to a local beach which had a cute beach bar as well as the local supermarket. However to travel into Split centre we had to use a taxi.
Anyway, lets talk about Split itself. A very popular city for all age groups due to the variety it has to offer. Below you'll find 5 top things to do in Split:
1) Visit the Old Town and the Diocletian's Palace:
Many old town's in other countries are beautiful, but this one comes close to topping the list! It's so beautiful that it became a World Heritage Site in 2014. I advise spending a few hours walking around the Old Town on foot, taking in all the renaissance architecture including the amazing traditional markets in Fruit Square!
2) The Riva - Split's Harbour:
A must do, especially in the evenings! Wander along the beautiful harbour and stop in any of the picturesque bars for a sunset cocktail! You may even get lucky and experience the live music taking place in the street. When we were there, large crowds gathered listening to the music and signing along - of course we joined in! And that was even before the G&T's!
3) Visit the Beach:
This sounds obvious in a nice hot sunny country, but Split's beaches are some of the best! The clear blue sea and the white sand makes all beaches idyllic. One of the most popular beaches is Bacive due to its location close to the city centre but you might prefer to explore a bit further out and visit some of the quieter beaches such as Firule or Ovcice.
4) Boat Day:
You might argue this isn't quite exploring Split itself because the boat trips take you away from the mainland, but I couldn't recommend this more! We had the best day ever exploring Hvar and many other beautiful islands, most famously seen in the Mamma Mia movies, whilst also snorkelling in the crystal clear sea! There are many options you can choose for your boat day, mainly half day or full day and some that include food and drink (definitely recommend!). We also visit the Blue Caves whilst out at sea - accessed via a small motor boat. See if you can book a trip that includes this whilst you are there!
5) Joe's Beach Bar:
Lastly, a recommendation for those of you who want to enjoy the sunshine with your friends and plenty of nice food and cocktails! We spent the day at Joe's Beach Bar, situated in a secluded beach cove and saw the most incredible sunsets! We had a cabana where we could sunbathe and gossip to our hearts content whilst sipping on jugs of the incredible White Wine Sangria! There was a live DJ throughout the day adding to the beach bar vibes! A must do for a group of friends making the most of their holiday!
There are definitely more things to do in Split, including zip lining for those adrenaline junkies, museums and history for those who enjoy culture and plenty of lively bars and restaurants for those looking for a good time. Whatever type of trip you are looking for, Croatia should be a strong contender! There is a good range of hotels and villas for accommodation and the holiday can cater for a wide range of budgets!
I definitely want to go back to explore even more of Split but also branch out further and visit other popular areas such as Dubrovnik!
